The final Discussion should clearly establish the novelty and importance of your contribution to knowledge, should consider alternate interpretations of the data and suggest any necessary qualifications and future lines for experimentation. The References are collected at the end of the thesis in the format which is used for your preferred journal.

Note that most downtown writing centres now use a shared online booking system.

To make an appointment with your writing centre, use the live link on your writing centre’s webpage, or start from the common login page.

The fourteen or so writing centres at U of T provide individual consultations with trained writing instructors, along with group teaching in workshops and courses.

There’s no charge for any of this instruction—it’s part of your academic program.

The Introduction should be between 20 to 30 pages long. The Results may consist of a series of chapters which are based on the content of draft or published papers in the usual format (Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion).

However, these chapters cannot be the actual papers which will likely be collaborative to a greater or lesser extent and thus may not represent the work of the student.

The mandate of writing centres is to help you develop writing skills as you progress through your studies.

All the undergraduate colleges have writing centres for their students, and so do most professional faculties and the School of Graduate Studies.

You will need to get a UTORid before you can use the online booking system.

The thesis should consist of Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. Examine other recent theses (available in the graduate Office) as possible models. The required Master's Thesis forms are available at the MSc, the Introduction and Discussion are often reasonably short, though much will depend on the particular problem and the advice of the Supervisory Committee.
