*Update for Sociology Majors Graduating in 2020 and Beyond For Sociology majors graduating in 2020 and beyond, the requirements for eligibility for summa honors will include the following, in addition to the above university summa requirements.Students must take at least five (5) Sociology courses numbered 100 or above.
Students whose record includes a serious disciplinary infraction will not normally be eligible for summa cum laude honors.
Exceptions to this policy can be made only after disclosure by the Dean of Student Affairs of the details of the infraction and subsequent vote by the faculty.
Students who wish to pursue an honors thesis must: IMPORTANT DEADLINES: October 15, 2019: Senior Honors Thesis Candidate Form must be submitted to Dowling Hall.
December 11, 2019: Defenses for February degree candidates must be completed by the last day of the fall semester reading period.
The Department encourages students to include the cluster completion on their resume as an area of specialization.
To complete the major with a cluster, a Sociology major must fill out the Declaration of Cluster form, available in the Department Office in Eaton Hall 102B, have his or her academic advisor sign the form, and turn it in at the Department office.Majoring in Sociology Using a Cluster Option Within the Sociology major, students may elect to concentrate their studies in an area of specialization called a Cluster.Although choosing a cluster is not required, students have found that concentrating their elective courses in a more specialized field affords them a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the selected topic.The Thesis Honors Program allows Tufts seniors to pursue a year-long independent program of study, to delve into a focused area of research within your major, and to produce an outcome that demonstrates exceptional undergraduate achievement.The senior honors thesis is a capstone experience for undergraduates in a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree program.The department must vote to confirm high distinction.*Highest distinction (summa cum laude) may be conferred at commencement on liberal arts students who achieve a record of six credits of A or A‐ in the courses required for one of their majors including related fields, and whose cumulative GPA is 3.80 or better.For determination of eligibility for Latin Honors, a student's cumulative grade point average (GPA) will mean the cumulative average of all grades earned at Tufts.Grades in courses taken at institutions other than Tufts shall not be used to calculate GPA, nor shall they be used to satisfy Latin Honors requirements for the number of As earned in a major.Some majors will encourage or permit less traditional theses that result in the creation of a short documentary film, translated book, collection of poems, novella, play, artistic exhibit, musical composition, or application of technology.However, even less traditional theses require substantial scholarly research and writing.
