Hillary, 12, will be serving as a legislative page from May 27 through June 7, performing a range of duties including preparing the legislative chamber for the morning’s debates, delivering messages and water for the MPPs, taking classes in legislative process and mathematics, and meeting with key legislative players such as party leaders and the Speaker of the house.“I just thought it would be really cool to do, it’s a once in a lifetime experience,” Hillary said of the opportunity.“I just thought I have to apply for it, because I’m only ever going to do it once.” Hillary, who is in the French immersion program at Uxbridge Public School, originally learned of the page program during a Grade 5 field trip to Queen’s Park.Hillary has been busy preparing for the position, with pages required to learn the faces, names and locations of all 107 MPPs before they begin, but said she is eager to get started.“I just want to have fun doing it, and learn a little bit.” Ontario's Legislative Page Program is open to students in grades 7 and 8 who have an interest in current affairs, have an academic average of 80 per cent or higher and get along well with their peers and adults.They typically serve a term of duty that lasts between 2 and 4 weeks, and are granted a leave of absence from school during this term.Pages wear a traditional uniform and perform various duties as they serve Parliament.As the day progresses, pages are involved in a number of activities including: delivering messages for the MPPs in chamber, taking classes in the legislative process and mathematics, and meeting with key legislative players such as the party leaders and the Speaker of the house. The legislative page program is open to high achieving students in grades 7 and 8 who have an interest in current affairs, have an academic average of 80 per cent or higher and get along well with their peers and adults. Applications for the legislative page program are accepted for two deadlines each year. Because the program is only open to Grade 7 and 8 students, she had to wait a few years to apply, but never forgot about it.“I’d like to learn more about the Ontario government because I think that’s a really interesting topic and there’s so much going on right now with Doug Ford and everything he’s doing with education and stuff,” she said.
