In a quantitative review of the literature in 2001, sociologist Paul R.Amato, then at Pennsylvania State University, examined the possible effects on children several years after a divorce.Furthermore, parents serve as role models, provide emotional, and practical support for their children.
Their grades usually drop lower than those children who are in stable family structured homes (Amato, 2006; O’Connor et al., 2000).
With divorced women take a more aggressive leap into the workforce to provide for their children, the kids begin to lose the emotional and family structure that the woman plays in their lives.
Children are effected socially, emotionally, economically and in their ability to learn.
Children who are accustomed to living with both parents in the same household tend to be more effected by divorce than those who are not accustomed to their parents living in the same household.
The stress of the situation can also cause the quality of parenting to suffer.
Divorce frequently contributes to depression, anxiety or substance abuse in one or both parents and may bring about difficulties in balancing work and child rearing.Rapid Recovery Divorce affects most children in the short run, but research suggests that kids recover rapidly after the initial blow. Mavis Hetherington of the University of Virginia and her then graduate student Anne Mitchell Elmore found that many children experience short-term negative effects from divorce, especially anxiety, anger, shock and disbelief. These reactions typically diminish or disappear by the end of the second year. Most children of divorce also do well in the longer term. The studies compared children of married parents with those who experienced divorce at different ages. The investigators followed these kids into later childhood, adolescence or the teenage years, assessing their academic achievement, emotional and behavior problems, delinquency, self-concept and social relationships.Kelly and Emery (2003) report that on A change in finances can become an external stressor for children. With parents being forced to maintain the financial way of living for their children separately, that they once had, the parents are not able to spend necessary time with their children. The kids then begin to lose the family and emotional structure that they once had.Proper meals on a consistent basis ensures proper growth in children, and promotes focus and attention. This one of the many reasons that children of divorced families begin to have lower grades in school and have changes in their behavior. Some parents are so worried that they remain in unhappy marriages, believing it will protect their offspring from the trauma of divorce. Researchers have found that only a relatively small percentage of children experience serious problems in the wake of divorce or, later, as adults. In this column, we discuss these findings as well as factors that may protect children from the potentially harmful effects of divorce.
