Let your child decide – but ensure they stick to it.

It’s very important to try to create a suitable place where your child can do their homework, ideally somewhere with a clear work surface, good lighting and no interruptions.

Let them see you and older children reading yourselves, too.

Make homework rewarding by setting up some treats like staying up 10 minutes later, spending 10 minutes extra on the computer, or having a friend round.

So I was facing two choices – Should I stand over her and insist that not doing homework was NOT an option? The choice I would make now is very different to what my choice would have been a few years back.

Or, should I tell her to put the books away, write a note to her teacher and just let her unwind and play in the lead-up to bedtime? If you’ve tried yelling, time-outs and punishment, but it only seems to make matters worse, give Positive Discipline a shot.
