Over the eight sessions of the workshop, we will take some time to dwell in the places our writers’ sensibility can travel to when we tune in to our senses and journey into memory and place.

We’re always looking for new workshop leaders, and for new ideas for workshops, so if you have a workshop that you’d like to propose, or that you’d like to see QWF organize, please write to us.

The Quebec Writers’ Federation is delighted to announce two scholarships to participate in QWF writing workshops during the fall session of 2020.

Creative writing studies theories and methods on expressing thoughts, feelings and emotions by using the written medium, as opposed to simply presenting written facts.

Students learn to use elements of fiction, character creation and plot development and, upon graduation, gain the opportunity to work as play writers, screenwriters, journalists and fiction writers.

In this fiction-writing workshop, we will get our stories to hit the ground running by working on our Page One.

Short story or long-form fiction, all the elements of narration are thrown into play right away on the first page (okay, maybe a little on the second).Through a combination of in-class writing exercises and reading scripts aloud, it will allow playwrights to take their scripts to the next level. How, as writers, can we break the surface of the everyday and go deep?In this class we will be reading and discussing a wide variety of very short stories, from contemporary writers and writers of the past.We will be reading as writers: seeking inspiration, and looking at what these stories are doing and how they achieve their ends.We offer workshops in a wide range of genres, including long- and short-form fiction, memoir, narrative nonfiction, poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, children’s and/or young adult literature, and career-related topics. We occasionally run single workshops at other times of year – keep an eye on the site and listings! The themes and problems of the piece are all present, stated or suggested, sometimes hidden. We will learn to do that: get out of the starting blocks fast, leaving our anxieties behind. The program has evolved over the years, adding new areas of specialization and expanding others. Thus we now offer (in addition to courses in writing poetry, fiction, and drama) advanced courses in scriptwriting and editing & publishing, as well as occasional courses in specialized subjects and forms, such as creative non-fiction, cross-genre writing, the long poem, the prose poem, and the novel and novella.
